MacBook Mini concept

Rumors of an Apple Netbook aside, we still don’t have one and likely will not for a good while. So designer Isamu Sanada decided to take it upon himself to try his hand at designing one. Obviously it has Apple good looks and portability. But it’s not quite there yet.

When folded, the MacBook Mini would measure 5.4-inches thick. Wow. That’s too thick. But the design is interesting. When fully expanded, the laptop will give you a keyboard, trackpad, 10-inch LED display, and 128GB SSD. Looks like there’s no optical drive either. And I would hope that the trackpad, cool as the design is, would fold under as well as over, because as it is, it’s going to get in the way.

HP reduces shipping materials by 97%, ships laptop in its own bag

It seems like common sense right? Package gadgets in a way that protects them, yet minimizes shipping materials. Not only is it good for the environment, it will save your company a whole lot of dough. How many times have you opened a box full of Styrofoam and other unnecessary packing materials, only to throw most of it away? Apparently it took awhile for HP to figure this out, but they are feeling much better now.

They are selling the new Pavilion dv692 laptop in its own recycled material laptop bag. Other then that, the only packing material in the bag with the laptop are some air bubbles. They ditched the extra cardboard and styrofoam, reducing the packing materials by a stunning 97%. It’s being sold at Wal-Mart and Sam’s Club, but I think we’d all like to see this become a larger trend. Hopefully other companies are paying attention. It’s simple, economical and beyond time. I recently bought an Acer Aspire 6920 and at the time I was happy to find that the box was not nearly as full of garbage as I feared it would be. This is a brilliant move.

Asus showcases bamboo laptops concept
These days everyone is going green. It’s not just for peace loving hippies anymore. That’s why Asus has their eye on a greener line of products. The idea is to make computers and notebooks out of environmentally friendly materials like bamboo. It makes sense, and not just from a Panda luring standpoint. Bamboo is not only environmentally friendly, but also very tough.

Asus products that will be made with bamboo include notebooks, LCDs and Mini PCs. They claim that they’ve figured out a special manufacturing process to make it even more durable. While the idea will not singlehandedly save Mother Earth, it will help a tad, while giving everything a nice retro look. My one concern is that when they harvest all the bamboo, the Pandas will be coming for our laptops

XtremeNotebooks 917V

XtremeNotebooks has gone to the extreme indeed by being one of the first to pack the new Intel Core 2 Quad processor into a laptop. Power up and get on board for this gaming rig ride on your lap - the Xtreme 917V is raising anchor with a base price of around $3,360.

The XtremeNotebooks 917V draws its power from an Intel Q6600 (2.4Ghz x 4) Quad Core CPU. To really get the benefits of this gaming machine on steroids though you’ll have to jack up the other specs (and price), which are somewhat minimal at 512MB of RAM, a 60GB hard drive and a single NVIDIA GeForce Go 7950 GTX card with 512MB of memory.

This tiny desktop refrigerator is a definite step up from the USB Beverage cooler “cold plate” we wrote about last fall. With the ability to cool your drink down with a running temperature of just over 8 degrees C, this USB Mini Fridge can hold and cool exactly one standard 12 ounce can. It’s powered solely by USB via your computer which makes it a fairly portable personal fridge that can sit on your desk and keep your drinks

laptop motherboard

Laptop computers, advantages and disadvantages.

As the price of laptop and notebook computers falls, more and more people are buying laptops. A laptop computer allows you to do work or be entertained when you are not in office, or traveling. Laptops are fast becoming popular among school and university students. An increasing number of schools are now implementing the use of laptop computers.

But there is another side to the wide adoption of laptops in everyday use in Exmouth. If anything goes wrong with one, it is hard to get it repaired quickly and at a fair price. Unlike desktop computers, laptop computers endure a lot of abuse as they are moved around, opened and closed and exposed to dust, dirt and moisture. Unfortunately, laptop computers are much harder to repair, as they are tightly built and require a much higher level of dismantling to access critical system components. In Exmouth we have earned a reputation based on our performance. If you are in the Exmouth area and are looking for a trusted source for laptop repairs then come to Computer Heaven Ltd Exmouth.

Graphics card aka video board

Graphics card aka video board

Laptop graphics card video board

A graphics card also known as a video card or VGA board is a laptop component responsible for creating images on a laptop screen.

In most low-mid range laptops the graphics card is integrated into the motherboard. In other words, it’s a part of the motherboard. If that’s the case, the graphics card is not removable or upgradeable. If the graphics card fails, you have to replace the whole motherboard.

A discrete graphics card can be found in high range models and high end gaming laptops. Discrete graphics cards can be removed and in some cases they are upgradeable.

Here’s another example of the discrete video card in a high end gaming laptop. As you see the video card can be separated from the motherboard.

Discrete video card in laptop

GRAPHICS CARD RELATED PROBLEMS

You can use the following method for troubleshooting problems related to graphics cards.

Let’s say your display stopped working properly. The image is distorted or garbled. Is this problem related to the VGA board or LCD screen?

Connect your laptop to an external monitor and take a look at the external video output. If you see the same problem as on the internal LCD screen, most likely it’s related to the VGA board. If video on the external monitor works fine and the problem appears only on the internal LCD screen, most likely your problem is related to the LCD screen or LCD cable.

TYPICAL VIDEO CARD FAILURE

Below you can see a few pictures taken from a laptop with a faulty video card.

1. When you start the laptop, the initial screen with manufacturer’s logo is not displayed properly on both internal LCD screen and external monitors. You can see random characters, vertical lines running through the logo, random colors, etc…

Laptop video fails on startup

2. Same problem appears when the laptop displays the boot menu. The screen is either not readable at all, or there are some random characters all over the image.

Garbled image on LCD screen

3. Finally, the laptop starts loading Windows, but the image on both screens is still garbled.

Garbled image on both screens

A problem like that is not related to the laptop screen or inverter board.

Again, if the video card is integrated into the motherboard and it fails, you’ll have to replace the motherboard.

    Kurtis,
In most laptops you cannot upgrade the graphics card because it’s a part of the motherboard but I’m not sure about your laptop. Can you give me the full name of your laptop? dv7 what?
I’ll see if I can find the service manual with a list of parts. Maybe I can answer your question after I look in the manual.

Take a look at the page 18, it has all a diagram of all major components in your notebook. There is no discrete video card mentioned. The video card is a part of the motherboard and unfortunately you cannot remove and replace it separately. You are stuck with what you have.

Hi, do you know if the Toshiba Qosmio F10-GP1 notebook computer has an integrated video card? My symptoms are exactly as above. Lynn,

do you know if the Toshiba Qosmio F10-GP1 notebook computer has an integrated video card?

I’ve never fixed a Qosmio F10 laptop, I assume it’s not sold in the USA. I guess your Qosmio F10 should be similar to Qosmio F15 (USA model).
In a Qosmio F10/F15 laptop the video card is integrated into the motherboard.
If there is a problem with the video card, you’ll have to replace the whole motherboard. Do you want to do it yourself? Check out instructions posted at http://www.irisvista.com/tech/
As an example, use Qosmio F15 guide.

    Luca,

i have a laptop from toshiba m30x and i have a problem with my grafic card. can i replace my grafic card with a new card?

Nope, you cannot. In a Toshiba Satellite M30X and M35X the video graphics card is integrated into the motherboard. You cannot remove and replace it with a new one. If there is a problem with the card, you’ll have to replace the whole motherboard.

  11. 31
    Luca Says:

Hello, the problem of my toshiba m30x is:
I was asked to update your video card drivers, then the images could be seen sometimes good and sometimes blurred, the gray, then the PC is lit and the monitor remained black, every time you view and occasionally stayed black, I have uninstalled the drivers, I rebooted, and the PC was seen with the basic settings, I have updated the drivers, insert the date of the ati catalist, given that my video card is an ati 9600/9700, and the next reboot the display was always black.
Only once has heard a beep and then another 2 faster, so I reported a problem to the video card, there is some way to prove whether it is actually the video card? can you control?

    Repair Man Says:

    Luca,

Only once has heard a beep and then another 2 faster, so I reported a problem to the video card, there is some way to prove whether it is actually the video card?

If you turn on the laptop and the screen stays black and absolutely blank (there is no image at all), the first thing to test would be memory. Try reseating the memory module and maybe replace it with a known good module.
On a Satellite M30X and M35X a bad memory module can produce a beep error - one long beep and three short.

You had, one long and two short. I guess it could be the video card but not sure 100%.
Anyway, in a Satellite M30X the video card is integrated into the motherboard. If the video card is bad you’ll have to replace the whole motherboard.

System board also know as motherboard

Laptop main board system board

A system board also known as motherboard or mainboard is the main circtuit board in any laptop. Unlike desktop PC system boards, laptop system boards come in thousands of different shapes and sizes. Laptop motherboards are model-specific. In other words, you cannot remove motherboard from a Toshiba laptop and stick it into a Dell laptop. All parts inside a laptop are connected to the system board, either directly via a connector mounted on the system board or through a cable.

n a typical laptop the following ports and components are permanently attached to the system board and cannot be easily removed and replaced without soldering:
1. Hard drive (HDD) connector.
2. CD/DVD drive connector.
3. Memory (RAM) slots.
4. Battery connector.
5. Keyboard connector.
6. Audio (headphone and microphone) jacks.
7. Volume control wheel.
8. USB ports.
9. Eithernet (RJ45 aka network) port.
10. IEEE 1394 (Fire Wire) ports.
11. Video chip and some other components and ports.

System board, processor (CPU) and LCD screen are the most expensive parts in any laptop. In some cases, when one of these three parts fails, it’s cheaper to buy a brand new laptop than replace the failed part. But each case is different so do your research.

System board removal

The system board is mounted inside the laptop base assembly. In order to remove or replace the motherboard, you’ll have to disassemble the whole laptop.

SYSTEM BOARD FAILURE SYMPTOMS.

When a system board fails, you may experience the following most common problems with your laptop. 1. The laptop is completely dead. There are no LED light activity when you press on the power button or plug in a known good AC power adapter. 2. The laptop starts but the video output on the LCD screen or external monitor is garbled. Most likely this is related to the VGA chip failure. 3. The laptop turns on without video on the screen and the power LED starts flashing. 4. The laptop works fine with AC power adapter but will not charge a known good battery. If that’s the case, most likely there is something wrong with the battery charging circuit or DC power jack.

The easiest way to buy a new computer

The easiest way to buy a new computer

by Marc Saltzman
Need a new PC? Spread out payments on your Bell bill.

Stop me if this sounds familiar: You walk into your local electronics store to buy a new computer and find yourself staring a sea of seemingly identical machines. Even more intimidating is trying to make sense of each PC's specs – CPU this, RAM that, gigabyte this, megahertz that – which might as well be written in Aramaic since it doesn't mean a stitch of sense to you.

And then there's the cash conundrum. Paying for a new laptop or desktop computer in one shot might just make your bank account buckle (or your spouse to seek legal advice).

Fortunately, there is a simple solution. It's called Total Internet packages from Bell.

Available in Ontario and Quebec at select Best Buy and Future Shop locations, Total Internet packages help you choose a brand-new HP computer – without having to understand any of the technical jargon – and lets you spread out low monthly payments that show up on your regular Bell bill.

And it's not called Total Internet package for nothing: included in your monthly payment is high-speed DSL Internet access, powered by Bell Sympatico.
To recap, you get a new PC and Internet together on your existing monthly Bell bill.

This falls into the "why hasn't someone thought of this earlier?" category.

This HP Pavilion laptop is one of the Total Internet packages being offered.
Go ahead, you deserve the upgrade.

How it works
Visit a participating Future Shop or Best Buy store and select from one of a couple of HP/Compaq computer options, such as a portable laptop or stationary desktop model. You can also pick from an entry-level PC or a super powerful computer. And don't worry, these HP machines have been pre-built with care and consideration to help take the guesswork out of the equation for you – even if you don't know your Celeron from your Centrino. Keep in mind, Best Buy and Future Shop locations may offer slightly different computer configurations.

Have fun playing around with these PCs. Ask questions. Go nuts. When you find one you like, find out if you need any peripherals, too, such as one of those fancy printer/scanner/copier thingamajigs, which you can buy with all the money you just saved on your new computer.

You walk out of the store with the computer, but the Sympatico DSL modem will be shipped to your door in a few days. And should you need some help setting it all up you won't be left out in the cold as the Total Internet package includes HP award-winning technical support reps who are standing by – just in case.

OK, so how much?
Depending on the model you choose, your monthly cost for the PC and Internet will be $59.95, $69.95 or $79.95.
Considering high-speed Sympatico DSL on its own costs $49.95 a month, for just $10 more per month you could have a brand-new PC, as well. Would you really miss $10 a month? Exactly.

More information on Total Internet packages is available at either:

N.B.: This offer is only available to residents of Ontario and Quebec.
